At GCG Automation & Factory Solutions, we excel as a trusted partner to systems integrators and end-users, delivering cutting-edge solutions to complex industrial challenges. One recent success story involved a collaboration with JS Controls, a motion control and material handling systems integrator, to develop a revolutionary solution for a customer with unique logistical challenges.

"GCG has been a strategic partner for many, many years. GCG has invested into resources to do robotic simulation, and through those resources and our mechanical design capabilities, we were able to simulate the concept to allow the customer to be confident that we were supplying a superior solution."

The Challenge: Barrel Handling with Precision

The task was to create an automated system capable of handling barrels weighing up to 550 pounds, delivered on their sides, and organizing them into a nine-barrel pallet configuration. Traditional mechanical systems presented significant obstacles, prompting JS Controls and GCG to devise a more innovative, efficient alternative.

The Solution: Advanced Robotics and Vision Systems

Central to the solution was the Yaskawa Motoman six-axis robot, chosen for its exceptional payload capacity to handle both the barrels and the substantial end-of-arm tooling weight.

To achieve precision in barrel handling, including picking and depalletizing, the system integrated APERA AI’s advanced vision technology. This system provided critical data on the barrels’ position, orientation, and tilt, allowing the robot to make accurate real-time adjustments. APERA AI’s role in enhancing robotic intelligence proved crucial to addressing the complexities of the application.

Supporting Components for Seamless Operation

A tailored dress-out kit from Murrplastik was used to manage the robot’s complex articulation, ensuring smooth, efficient operation between pallet and pick points. This addition contributed to reliable performance and simplified maintenance.

Key Benefits to the Customer

The collaboration resulted in a cost-efficient, low-maintenance system that combines advanced robotics with intelligent vision capabilities. Utilizing GCG’s robotic simulation resources, JS Controls and the customer confidently validated the concept, ensuring a reliable solution.

This system not only reduces the complexity associated with traditional mechanical solutions but also provides dual functionality—handling both palletizing and depalletizing tasks within a single unit. Its optimized design offers a low cost of ownership and a strong return on investment.
